GUIDELINES FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE PLACEMENT

 

Students with no Spanish language experience:

If you have not taken Spanish in high school, are not a heritage speaker, nor have been exposed to the language, you will enroll in Spanish 0101. You do NOT need to take a placement test or request a permission number.

 

Students who have taken 2 (two) or less years of Spanish in high school have two options: 

A: If you want to take a Spanish course within one academic year since you took your last Spanish class (in other words, if you want to enroll in the Fall or the Spring immediately after you took a Spanish class in High School), you will enroll in Spanish 0115. You do NOT need to take a placement test or request a permission number.

B: To take a Spanish course after one academic year has passed since you took your last Spanish class in High School, you will enroll in Spanish 0101. You do NOT need to take a placement test or request a permission number.

 

Students who have taken 3 (three) or 4 (four) years of Spanish in high school, and have had no additional experience with the language have two options:

A: If you want to take a Spanish course within one academic year of your high school graduation (in other words, if you want to enroll in the Fall or the Spring immediately after you took your last Spanish class), you will enroll in Spanish 0103. You do NOT need to take a placement test or request a permission number.

B: If you want to take a Spanish course after one academic year has passed since you took your last Spanish class, you will enroll in Spanish 0115. You do NOT need to take a placement test or request a permission number.

 

SPANISH PLACEMENT EXAM

You must take both components of the Spanish placement test if 

  • You are a heritage speaker
  • You are a transfer student
  • You have taken an Spanish AP test and your score is either pending or you have received a score of 4 or 5
  • You have taken 4 (years) of Spanish and have additional experience with the language (studying or living abroad in a Spanish speaking country).

AP Credits

In order for students to receive 3 language credits they must meet the following criteria.

  • Receive a 4 or 5 on the AP Spanish Language Exam
  • Must be able to test out of SPAN 0104 in a oral and written placement test

The department does not accept IB scores.

 

Placement Exam Components

  • Online, written component - Take any time BEFORE the oral interview and write down your score. Schedule a placement test
  • Oral interview component - Click here to schedule an oral interview. If you took a Spanish AP exam and your score is pending or you scored 4 or 5, please let the Spanish Advisor know at the time of the oral portion of the Spanish Placement Test.

 

PERMISSION NUMBERS

In order to enroll in Spanish 0104, Spanish 0120, Spanish 0125 and any other Spanish upper level course, you need to request a permission number. Please click here to complete your request.
