Spanish & HLC Minors

The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures offers three minors: a minor in Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian Culture (for more information, see the Portuguese minor webpage), a minor in Hispanic Language and Culture, and a minor in Spanish.

The Spanish Minor

The Spanish minor is a minor in Hispanic literature and culture. This course of study will prepare students for academic pursuits in Spanish and give them a broad understanding of the literatures and cultures of the Hispanic world.

Requirements for the Spanish Minor

Before declaring the minor, students must complete SPAN 0101, SPAN 0102, SPAN 0103, and SPAN 0104.
Students with previous Spanish experience are strongly encouraged to take a placement exam.
Students must earn a grade of B+ or higher in SPAN 0104 to declare this minor.

The Hispanic Language and Culture Minor

This minor differs from the Spanish Minor in its emphasis on language, its nuances, and its uses in global cultural contexts, rather than on literature. It was designed particularly with students pursuing careers in health and medicine in mind, but also for those interested in business, linguistics, or other in-depth studies or applied uses of the Spanish language.

Requirements for the Hispanic Language and Culture Minor

This minor requires 18 credits for completion. At least half of the credits for the minor,
including no fewer than one upper-level course, must be taken on the Pittsburgh campus.
